Spry Floral is a locally owned and operated flower company located in Boise, ID. Hillary Clark has been running the business and was able to be interviewed by Kaitlin. For our October Live Good, Live Local, we are hosting a giveaway for your chance to win a customized wreath!

What is your favorite thing about running Spry?

I love the freedom. Not only the freedom of being a business owner, but as a creative. Spry is my outlet for a variety of mediums. I specialize in event floral design, which overflows into my love of floral preservation. I press and dry everything I get my hands on. With those elements, I make pressed flower frames, which are soldered using the stained glass method. It's funny, because my root focus in flowers is natural, soft, earthen - but somehow it opened my eyes to much harder elements of cutting/grinding glass and melting metal!

What is your most popular item(s) that you offer?

For stained glass - my night lights have been a hit!

For florals - I think what is popular is my use of uncommon ingredients. Foraged branches, dried flowers, unique varieties.

Are you currently involved in any other business ventures?

Currently, I am focused on Spry!

What item do you recommend to all clients?

Every event needs at least one main impactful floral moment. I say, go minimal on wedding personals, and focus your floral investment on a banging ceremony installation or beautifully curated reception tablescapes.

Also! Trust your floral designer! The floral world has shifted away from traditional, opening up to a sea of new ingredients and varieties. Floral designers take into consideration seasonality, texture, shape and color theory. Find a designer whose work you love, and trust them.
What is your favorite flower?

That is so hard! There are so many possible ingredients to be inspired by! I thrive on foraging, so I think I would have to say I am inspired by seasonality. Putting in the time to find ingredients that were free to grow in their natural element and shape, rather than ordered from across the world where they were grown purposely and perfect.

LOCAL + SEASONAL + FORAGED

Are there any new items/arrangements that you will be adding to your shop?

My shop is growing! I am so excited to have breathing room for building floral arrangements, and a new designated station for stained glass. I foresee my offerings expanding quickly now that everything can be set up and accessible at all times. Keep an eye out for new glass patterns, and larger pieces!

How did you end up running Spry?

Spry came about through a combination of desire to be a business owner, and out of necessity. My husband and I are working on family planning - I wanted to keep working in florals, to be able to work from home, and have consistent work.

I have freelanced with a handful of florists over the years, but with that comes the eb and flow of the event season. Work was not always consistent. Last year, when the wedding season slowed, I had time on my hands. So, I started playing with preservation. I began acquiring tools and teaching myself stained glass. That was the magic key! A balance between event florals, and a craft I can work on inbetween events or seasons. Not only does it fit my vision of what daily life could look like, but it satisfies the need for change, variety, and expression.
